Mayoral Proclamation's received each year since 2002 name Children's Day at the South Street Seaport the "official children's day of the City of New York.
- History:
- The inaugural Children’s Day took place at the World Trade Center in 1993, months after the February bombing of the Twin Towers. Originally hosted by the Port Authority of NY & NJ, over 7,000 people attended that first year. Growing in vision and grandeur each year since, Children’s Day continued at the World Trade Center through 2001.
- After the tragic events of September 11, 2001, it seemed the Children’s Day tradition might come to an end. But the perseverance of a dedicated few ensured that New York’s kids would continue to have a day of free fun downtown. The South Street Seaport has provided a home for the event ever since.
- All events and activities are free and open to the public. The event is RAIN OR SHINE.
- Children’s Day is produced by Dima Productions.
